Wood Floor Refinishing

Refinishing is the process of sanding and coating a wooden floor. Prior to refinishing, the floor needs to be completely clear. If carpet had been on the floor all carpet nails must be removed. The process for a new floor and an existing floor are much the same for sanding. The floor is sanded with the large machine with a heavy grit paper to clean the floor. The condition of the floor will determine what grit to start with. Once the floor has been cleaned it is resanded with higher grades of paper to smooth out the floor. It is finished with a buffing machine, which uses a screen. After screening and vacuuming, the floor is ready for a coat of sealer. This is followed by at least two coats of finish. If there is a wood stain to be applied to the floor it goes on before the sealer.

The floor will be dry to touch and to walk on woth socks only within a few hours. No furniture or heavy traffic for at least three days as the floor cures as it can be easily marked in the first few days.
